Retail

Retail

There are really only two things people sell: Services or Goods. Goods are sold either on a wholesale or retail basis. Knowing one’s product as well as one’s customer is extremely important.  It makes marrying that product to a customer’s needs much easier and usually results in a happier customer. Too many times, we tell the customer what they want rather than ask them for what they need.

Retail has its challenges, mainly in what to sell, how much to sell it for, and how much to have in sufficient quantities available for sale. If not dealt with properly, any one of these can cause trouble for the retailer and result in unhappy customers, reduced business, and potentially financial failure. “They never have what I want” or “They always run out of what I need” or worse, “Their prices are too high”. None of these are what the retailer ever wants to hear.

In 1888, Richard Sears first printed a catalog selling watches and jewelry. People were still flocking to the brick-and-mortar stores in the city but for those too far away to travel, the catalog proved a huge sales tool. Today, the brick-and-mortar retailer has another problem to deal with: Internet Sales. Most people who shop via the internet do so for price, then the convenience of not leaving their homes. Because most internet sales are not completed in the state in which they reside, online sales without sales taxes, without the overhead of the brick-and-mortar store, with reduced staffing requirements through automatic order taking and third party inventory management companies who charge a small fee to receive, house and ship product, the internet marketer can charge less and still make a healthy profit. With today’s economy, what will make a brick-and-mortar retailer more attractive than shopping online?

Next Level Planners, LLC can work with the brick-and-mortar retailer to help redesign their business model to offer what the internet can’t offer. The services offered by our company will not eliminate the threat that brick-and-mortar retailers have from internet sales, especially from those outside of the US, but it can help reduce the risk through rethinking the retailer’s business model.
